Murder at The Queens!

Last Sunday saw the arrival of our first ever murder mystery night which saw the actors and audience transported back to the psychedelia of 1967. The atmosphere was buzzing as everyone arrived in brightly coloured 60's get up and settled in for jugs of Martini or snowballs complete with cherries and umbrellas. Noone seemed particularly concerned at the crime scene and chalked out body in the corner..our host was dead but the party went on!

And so the evening continued..the actors played their parts beautifully and the audience got wrapped up in the action and strived hard to work out their solutions. By the end of the performance we were surprised at the broad spectrum of theories as to 'who dunnit'...and impressed that our acting had been good enough to fool as only the select few (Roland's table) got the correct answer.

All in all a truly memorable night..so much so that we're doing it again at the end of the month AND we even received fan mail today!!!

Next mystery is set in 1900's Paris...should be interesting...

The arrival of Gethin's cider!

At The Queens we're getting (which we're rather proud of...) a reputation for offering real ales and local ciders. Providing these is a labour of love as it involves carefully searching out of suppliers and 'pain staking' testing of wares.

This week we are very very proud to announce the arrival of GETHIN'S CIDER. Gethin's cider comes from Haverfordwest and is a real family labour of love, very much like our pub! We are currently stocking his sweet variety which comes in at 6%. I had a little samplet earlier and it is a beautiful dark amber colour and tastes absolutely fantastic. Full of fresh apple flavour. Very quaffable in this gorgeous sunshine we're having!!!

So why not pop in for a pint..what a fabulous way to support local business..a pint in the sunshine!!!

The Queens records

Ladies and gentlemen we would like to introduce you to 'The Queens records' which we created in order to raise funds for Air Ambulance. If you can beat any of these...for a small donation...your name will be recorded for posterity in the pub.

Current record holders -
Eating three poppadoms - Liam Choules - Three minutes and one second
Eating three dry crackers - Ieuan - One minute thirteen point eight seconds
Drinking a pint of water with a straw - Donna - Eleven seconds

Saturday night fever

Opened the doors at 7pm to lots of nice people all wanting to be fed...most of whom left as soon as they heard we had a quiz! They were replaced by our faithful group of genii who ensured a fun evening. Five teams competing for the honour of 'The Queens brain'! Spen, Dai and Rory lost eight points and came last!! Team Devoart had thirteen more than them! Team Nantymoel and Making up the numbers had to have six million tie breakers in order to separate them....with Nantymoel eventually beating them...hard luck Graham!!

Eurovision excitement!

Last night saw the arrival of the 55th Eurovision song contest at The Queens. We are huge fans and so we had been cajoling our regulars into sharing our excitement - which they did with gusto! Anyone passing through the door was issued with a quiz sheet, scorecard and (if they participated in our sweepstake) a flag relevant to the country they had picked from the hat.

The scorecards provided people with lots of amusement as snippets of conversation such as 'FIRE - ten points' or 'Oh god, white denim again' echoed across the air.
Also - with a little financial incentive - people were waving their flags frantically, and you wouldn't believe the switched allegiances - A girl from up North suddenly became a Greek and I personally, though dressed as a French lady was rooting for Russia..well the flags are the same colour....I guess...

All in all lots of Euro madness...which despite the 100 million Russians in Europe did not see me win either of the prizes...those went to Dave as overall winner of the competition - Germany, and Sharon - our in-house winner - Greece. Double celebrations for Sharon as it was also her 30th birthday - Many happy returns!

Quiz buffs!

Well, what a battle we had this week with all five teams fighting for the prize of 'Brain of The Queens'. It was a very close thing with 'Propping up the bar' having 17, as did 10-1,'The A-Team' had 18 and the winners - 'The three amigos' had 19. They will be back next year for their annual reunion. Spen, Dai, Rory, Denise and Martin are all ready for this Saturday's Eurovision themed quiz!!

The sad story of snail 13...

Yes, the snails are ready and raring to go again. Unfortunately we have to report the sad demise of number 13! It decided to attack Dai's green beans, but is was unaware, they had been treated with slug pellets! Unlucky for some......
Watch this space for the date of the next race!

Launching the new Summer menu!

This weekend saw the launch of our new Summer menu - it's been a long, hard Winter and we wanted to offer something light and fresh to enjoy in the 'sunshine'.

As well as a new menu we've worked hard to make the pub and patio look tip top. There has been much scrubbing, dusting and polishing ready for the new season.

So what are we offering?

Well, in true Queens style - something a bit different. The jewel in our food crown being our home smoked trout salad. Spen spent Saturday very lovingly preparing the trout for the smoker and then smoking himself out to provide a delicacy for the public's delectation!

Hello and welcome!

So who are we and why are we blogging?

We are a family run pub in West Wales who take pride in supplying the public with a wide range of real ales and Welsh ciders.

We also serve delicious meals seven days a week. Be it a light lunch or a romantic steak meal - we can provide.

Oh and did I mention we have a bookshop? Yes just a little something to make us extra special!

Now then that's the businessy bit but there is another reason for this blog and that is the every day happenings at The Queens. In recent times we've been writing up all the local news and anecdotes above the bar but they're soon lost to the mists of time - this way we hope they'll be here for time eternal.
